Guest Writers’ Recommended Writing Books
JANET EVANOVICH:
I recommend Janet Evanovich with Ina Yalof - How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author
STELLA CAMERON: I recommend Writing Fiction. A Guide to Narrative Craft by Janet Burroway.
SUZANNE BROCKMANN: I really recommend William Goldman's book Adventures in the Screen Trade.
Yeah, it's a different medium -- screenwriting as opposed to novel writing. But keep in mind that Goldman was a novelist before he became a screenwriter. (He wrote Marathon Man and Magic and The Princess Bride as books first, before he wrote the screen versions.)
DENISE DOMNING: I recommend Lajos Egri’s book The Art of Dramatic Writing.
“Premise is so important.”
CHRISTINE JANSSEN:
Dare to Be a Great Writer by Leonard Bishop (Writer Digest Books).
Says Christine: “I’ve got paper clips, dog-eared corners, yellow highlighter all over it. You don’t need to read it cover to cover; just open it at random and you’ll find something you might have glossed over before but now that you’ve progressed in your writing, it has meaning for you.”
PAULINE JONES: Becoming a Writer by Dorothea Brande (published by Tarcher/ Putnam)
Says Pauline: "Brande's book was this wonderful invitation to explore the possibilities of who you are and what you could be. It's a prewriting book, not an advice book, but as wonderful as a hot bath on a cold day.... "
KAY LE GRAND: “I really really like Phyllis Whitney's Guide to Fiction Writing.”
