Recommended Writing Books
Like most writers, I sometimes get approached by people who want to have their stories written. I'm pretty tied up with my own work, but I do like to help out when I can. I went through my writer’s books a while back and picked out the ones that have helped me the most. Now when someone approaches me, I recommend these books to them.
The first and foremost is Stephen King’s On Writing. If anyone knows how to explain how to put the word to the page, it’s Mr. King. The first half of the book is his own personal history. The second half is a 'How To' on how to write. The last chapter deals with his much publicized accident. King has a great outlook on life and on writing. Every writer, even if they don't read horror, should read On Writing.
James Frey’s How to Write a Damn Good Novel. One of the best writer’s books I ever read, and the first one I ever picked up. Mr. Frey tells you how to sit down and get started. Character development, background information. Frey coined the term "idiot in the attic," a phrase that even my nine year old knows as a standard form of description!
Lastly, The 38 Most Common Fiction Writing Mistakes, Jack M. Bickham. I think Chapter One of this book should be read by every writer--no matter where they are in their career--every December 31st as a reminder of how it’s done. In Mr.Bickham’s words: “Writers write. Everyone else makes excuses.”
